Norwegian Olympic medallist Audun Gronvold dies after lightning strike - VIDEO

Audun Gronvold, the Olympic bronze medallist in ski cross, has died at the age of 49 after being struck by lightning during a cabin trip, the Norwegian Ski Federation announced on Wednesday.

Idman.biz, citing Reuters, reports that the tragic incident occurred earlier this week, and although Gronvold was rushed to hospital and treated for his injuries, he passed away late on Tuesday.

Born in Hamar, Gronvold earned his place in Norwegian sports history with a bronze medal in men’s ski cross at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and another bronze at the 2005 World Championships. Before transitioning to freestyle skiing, he competed in alpine skiing as a national team athlete from the 1993-94 to 2003-04 seasons.

Federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug paid tribute, calling Gronvold “a remarkable figure” who played vital roles as an athlete and coach. “There will be a big void after Audun,” she said.
