Puerto Rican volleyball player Nayka Benitez, a key player for Azerbaijan champions Azeryol, shared her thoughts in an interview with AZERTAC. In her debut season, she helped the team secure the national title.
- You became Azerbaijan champions in your first season with Azeryol. What are your thoughts on this achievement?
- This season was a tough one for us. We faced many injuries and some changes in the lineup. While our rivals had been training together since last September, we only started practicing with a full squad in January. That’s why winning the championship meant a lot. I’m happy to have lifted the trophy in my first year here. It was a team effort all the way.
- After losing 0–3 to Absheron in the first final match, many didn’t expect a comeback...
- We hadn’t beaten Absheron all season, and most people assumed they’d be champions. They had a strong lineup and were seen as favorites. After the first match, we regrouped and reminded ourselves that we had one more shot and nothing to lose. Our head coach, Paolo Tofoli, always told us every match has its own story and anything can happen. His belief in us was key. We went into the second game with a fresh mindset, full of energy, and ready to enjoy it. I felt we could turn it around — and we did.
- As a foreign player, how do you view the level of the Azerbaijan Women's Volleyball League?
- We had some really exciting matches this season. I’ve heard that the Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation is planning improvements for next season, and that’s encouraging. The league is definitely growing.
- Are you planning to stay with Azeryol for another season?
- Yes, I’ll be returning to the club. I’ve had a great experience here. Everyone’s been very welcoming, and I’ve learned a lot. I’m happy to stay for another season.
- What are your impressions of Azerbaijan and Baku?
- Before coming here, I didn’t know much about Azerbaijan. I was curious what life would be like in a country so far from Puerto Rico and with such a different culture. But my teammates and others helped me feel at home. Now, I’m truly happy in Baku. My favorite place is Icherisheher — it’s full of history and beautiful architecture.
- You recently visited Lankaran with your team to celebrate the championship. What did you enjoy there?
- Lankaran’s nature is stunning. It reminded me a lot of Puerto Rico. I enjoyed every moment of the trip.
