"The International Judo Federation highly appreciated the organization of the "Grand Slam" held in Baku. This competition has been held in our country for many years now.
Rashad Rasullu, general secretary of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation, told Idman.biz.
The official of the Federation evaluated the recent performances of our judokas and their success in the "Grand Slam". According to him, many countries brought their 1st teams to our capital because of the fight for rating points: "The competition was very strong. Yashar Najafov gave an extraordinary performance. He defeated the Japanese athlete in the final with ipponla in a very short time. It was welcomed by the officials of the International Judo Federation. Leyla Aliyeva took the second place thanks to their training camps and determined preparation of head coach Rashad Mammadov. Zelim Tchkayev is the athlete we are evaluating as a surprise. He easily defeated all his opponents. Hidayat Heydarov became our other athlete who won a gold medal. He is currently the first shining star of Azerbaijani judo. We expected a medal from Zelim Kotsoyev. Although he lost to a Russian athlete in the semi-finals, he pleased us with a bronze medal. We also believed in Ushangi Kokauri in heavyweights, but we were disappointed by his unsuccessful performance."
He said that they plan to hold the "Grand Slam" in the National Gymnastics Arena, not in the Sports Palace named after Heydar Aliyev.
Rasullu also emphasized that more prestigious competitions will be organized in our country in the coming years: "Azerbaijan had the experience of the World Championship in 2018. I am sure that the world and European championships will be held in our country in the future. The International Judo Federation can easily entrust this work to our country. Because in terms of resources and organization, Azerbaijan does not lag behind other countries."
It should be noted that Yashar Najafov (66 kg), Hidayat Heydarov (73 kg), Zelim Tchkayev (81 kg) won gold medals, Leyla Aliyeva (48 kg) won silver medals, and Zelim Kotsoyev (100 kg) won bronze medals in the Grand Slam. .
