There will be many changes in the 2025/2026 season of the Azerbaijan Premier League.
Idman.biz, citing Teleqraf, reports that Elgiz Abbasov, the Technical Sports Director of the Professional Football League, informed journalists about this.
He stated that the main changes are related to the championship format, the number of teams, and the foreign player limit: “This season, 12 teams will compete. Unlike last season, this season the championship will consist of 3 rounds. As a result, there will be no difference in the number of home and away games for the teams. The foreign player limit was 7+4 last season, but this year there is no limit. There have also been changes in fees, which you are aware of.”
Abbasov also drew attention to infrastructure problems faced by teams in the Premier League: “Football is always a sport that loves innovation. We have already made certain changes. Teams may have infrastructure problems. We had previously visited the stadiums of Karvan and Imishli. The condition of those stadiums did not allow playing football even at an amateur level, let alone the Premier League. But both clubs have now started renovation works.”
He emphasized that the PFL is concerned about stadium issues: “One month before the championship starts, we are asking clubs for their stadiums. Currently, there are problems with 4 stadiums. Renovation works at Turan Tovuz will begin on July 20. During this time, they will play their games at Azersun Arena. Although this will disappoint fans from Tovuz, it is a good step regarding infrastructure as they will now play on a natural pitch.”
