Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance used to treat hair loss.
Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that the 30-year-old Spaniard failed the doping test following Bilbao’s 3-0 loss to Manchester United in the Europa League semi-final on May 1.
Alvarez revealed he unknowingly took medication for alopecia, a condition linked to his testicular cancer diagnosis in 2016. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said, calling the news a “very hard blow.” He is currently suspended and unable to comment further due to confidentiality during the ongoing disciplinary process.
Athletic Bilbao expressed full support for Alvarez, trusting the authorities handling the case. UEFA has declined to comment until a final decision is reached. Alvarez remains hopeful to return to the pitch soon with the club’s backing.
