One of the longest-serving foreign footballers in Azerbaijan, Ernad Skulic, gave an exclusive interview to Apasport.az, sharing his thoughts on the UEFA Europa Conference League matchup between Zira and HNK Hajduk Split.
– Zira drew Hajduk in the Conference League qualifiers. What are your thoughts?
– Rashad Sadygov’s team had an excellent season. They finished second in the league, which is a historic achievement, especially in terms of total points.
– What advantages does Hajduk have over Zira?
– Their biggest asset is striker Marko Livaja. He’s arguably the best player in the Croatian league and is incredibly hard to stop. Plus, Hajduk recently appointed Gonzalo Garcia as their new head coach, who’s known for favoring technical football. I know him from his time at Istra.
– What can we expect from the return leg in Split?
– The stadium in Split is always packed and loud. That kind of atmosphere makes a huge difference. It will be a serious challenge for Zira.
– Hajduk hasn't done well in Europe recently. Could that be an advantage for Zira?
– Definitely. Their recent European failures, like not getting past Ruzomberok last season, could give Zira a psychological edge. The first leg in Baku is crucial.
– Any updates about Ivan Rakitić possibly joining Hajduk?
– Nothing is confirmed yet. Time will tell whether he joins the squad or not.
– What’s the best way to beat Hajduk?
– It’s hard to say exactly what style they’ll play, but knowing Garcia, they’ll focus on a technical approach. The key for Zira is to keep Marko Livaja away from the ball and goal-scoring areas. I’m sure Rashad Sadygov will analyze Hajduk thoroughly. Both matches promise to be very interesting.
The first leg will be held in Baku, followed by the return match in Split.
