Sabail captain: "We've tarnished our name, we're to blame for relegation"

Sabail defender Yusif Nabiyev has spoken out following the team’s relegation from the Misli Premier League to the First Division.

The 27-year-old fullback shared his thoughts in an interview with Report, Idman.biz reports.

The captain expressed deep disappointment:

“Our situation had already become difficult. The point gap with other teams kept growing. We tried to motivate ourselves to get out of it. But it didn’t work, and we’re upset. We didn’t want things to end like this. As players, our names have been tarnished. We’re responsible for the team’s relegation to the First Division. It’s not just about the players—there were people working behind the scenes, people supporting their families. It’s a tough situation.”

Nabiyev added that he still hopes for the club’s return to the top flight:

“I don’t know the details of what comes next. Will the team fight for the title in the First Division? I don’t know. I just hope they play to return to the elite level and compete again in the main championship. Sabail is truly a good club.”

Commenting briefly on his own future, he said:

“For now, I have no plans. I’m just waiting to see what happens. I’m not thinking about other clubs or contracts yet. We still have two games left. After that, I’ll look ahead.”

For context, Sabail currently sits last in the table with 22 points. With two rounds remaining, the Baku side trails ninth-place Sumgayit by 8 points.
