"Of course, the participation of 'Absheron Lions' and 'Neftchi' in the European Cup is a very important and encouraging event for Azerbaijani basketball.
Idman.biz reports that these words were said by Farrukh Mahmudov, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation (ABF), in an interview with AZERTAC.
According to him, this is a clear indicator of the growing interest and development of basketball in our country: 'The meeting of "Absheron Lions" with the Cypriot club "Anorthosis" in the qualifying round is an important start for our representative. Although the Cypriot club, which models itself after the Greek basketball style, is a tough opponent, I believe that with proper analysis and approach to the game, it is possible to compete against this team. If we advance to the next round, very strong teams await us. It is enough to mention the famous Spanish club "Casademont Zaragoza." The other two opponents are also leading clubs in their countries. But we need to gain experience at this level and further develop our playing philosophy.'
The official noted that "Neftchi" is in a very competitive group: 'Neftchi will start the competition directly from the regular season. Teams like "Kalev/Cramo," "Bursaspor," and "Trefl Sopot" have extensive experience in European competitions. For "Neftchi," these games are both a test and a serious opportunity to gain experience. The club's last season reaching the final in the Azerbaijan Basketball League and delivering a worthy game against strong "Sabah" gives us some hope. I believe that with the newly appointed experienced head coach and his correct transfer policy, the team will fight to advance from the group as well. Overall, the main goal for both clubs is not only results but also to gain experience on the international stage, improve the quality of play, and represent Azerbaijani basketball properly. I believe this tournament will provide our clubs with significant motivation and an important boost for development.'
If the Absheron team defeats Cyprus's "Anorthosis" in the first qualifying round, they will compete in Group H against "Casademont" (Zaragoza, Spain), "Falco" (Hungary), and "Bakken Bears" (Denmark).
"Neftchi" will face "Kalev/Cramo" (Estonia), "Bursaspor" (Turkiye), and "Trefl" (Poland) in Group I.
The European Cup qualifying round matches will take place on September 24 and October 1."
