“Being selected to compete in the regular season of the FIBA Basketball Champions League is a major recognition for Azerbaijani basketball, our federation, and our club. It’s an honor, and we are proud to represent Azerbaijan in such a prestigious competition.”
These words come from Rimas Kurtinaitis, head coach of Sabah Basketball Club, as he spoke to Idman.biz about his team’s historic debut in the main round of the FIBA Champions League.
The experienced Lithuanian coach emphasized the magnitude of the challenge:
“It’s going to be a huge responsibility. The regular season features clubs with years of experience at this level, like Alba and Valencia. They have solid systems and deep rosters. We may lack their pedigree, but we won’t make it easy for anyone. We will do everything possible to proudly represent Azerbaijan in Europe’s elite basketball league.”
Kurtinaitis also addressed the club’s transfer strategy:
“In the group stage, our first two opponents will likely be top-seeded teams. Once the draw is made, we’ll begin targeted preparations. We're actively working on signings and will strive to build a roster worthy of the Champions League.”
Sabah previously competed in the qualification phase of the FIBA Champions League last season. Their promotion to the main stage marks a historic first for Azerbaijani basketball.
