The goal of Azerbaijan national team consisting of under-18 female basketball players in the B division of the European Championship has been announced.
The head coach of the team, Evren Alkaya, made a statement to Report about this, Idman.biz reports.
He said that their goal is to win as many games as they can: "For the first time in our history, we will compete in the B division. Almost all of the teams here are leading teams in women's basketball. They have a really good history. Our opponents are strong, but we will compete in the matches."
Alkaya said that Azerbaijan has not had great success in women's basketball: "The girls we have been training for two years may perform a little poorly at the European Championship. But we will try to raise it to a higher level in training camps and in the tournaments we will participate in. In April and May, we participated in several games in the Turkish capital Ankara. Our team won 6 matches and lost 2. The next training camp will start on May 19. Before the matches in the U-18 B division, they will participate in one more tournament. We believe in the girls, they are very willing. But we need some time. I and the technical staff are doing our best. We intend to represent Azerbaijan in the best way."
Azerbaijani national team will face the national teams of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Ukraine, Iceland and Lithuania in Group C of the B division. The matches will be held in the Lithuanian cities of Vilnius and Alytus between July 4-13.
