The reason why Azerbaijani women’s volleyball clubs are not participating in European competitions has been revealed.
The president of the federation, Shahin Baghirov, gave a statement to Teleqraf on the matter, Idman.biz reports.
Baghirov said the issue is related to the level of preparation of the teams: “At the club level, we aim to participate in European competitions in the future. But for this, serious preparation is needed. Fully reliable and sustainable clubs must be established.”
Instead, the federation head emphasized that the Azerbaijani women's national team will compete in the 2026 European Championship: “Some of the matches will be held in Azerbaijan. Our goal is to represent the country well at the continental championship, achieve good results, and advance beyond the group stage.”
The last Azerbaijani team to compete in the CEV Champions League among women’s clubs was Azerrail during the 2016/2017 season. In the following years, Azerbaijani teams only took part in the CEV Cup and Challenge Cup. For the 2025/2026 season, no club will participate in continental tournaments. The 2026 European Championship will be held from August 21 to September 6 in Turkiye, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Azerbaijan.
