Freestyle wrestler reaches final in Tirana as team continues strong medal push

Islam Bazarganov will compete for gold at the European Wrestling Championships in Tirana, as Azerbaijan continue their impressive campaign across multiple disciplines, İdman.Biz reports.

The 57kg freestyle wrestler is set to face Musa Mehtikhanov in the final, representing United World Wrestling. His progression to the gold-medal bout underlines Azerbaijan’s growing strength in freestyle wrestling on the continental stage.

Elsewhere, Jabrayil Hajiyev will contest a bronze-medal match at 79kg, where he is due to face the winner of the bout between Rasul Shapiyev and Tariel Gafrindashvili.

Azerbaijan have already secured a number of medals at the championships. In Greco-Roman wrestling, Hasrat Jafarov (67kg) and Qurban Qurbanov (82kg) claimed gold, while Rashad Mammadov (55kg), Nihat Mammadli (60kg) and Islam Abbasov (87kg) earned bronze medals, helping the team finish top of the Greco-Roman standings.

In the women’s competition, Jala Aliyeva (57kg) and Gunay Gurbanova (59kg) also secured bronze, further contributing to the country’s overall medal tally.

The European Championships in Tirana will conclude on 26 April, with Azerbaijan aiming to add to their medal haul in the closing stages.
