Azerbaijani judoka Murad Fatiyev will compete for a bronze medal at the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Fatiyev advanced to the semifinals of the men's 90 kg category, where he suffered defeat against Japan's Goki Tajima.
The Azerbaijani athlete will now face Serbia's Nemanja Majdov in the bronze medal contest.
Fatiyev began his campaign with a victory over Greece's Theodoros Tselidis in the round of 32.
He then defeated Estonia's Klen Kristofer Kaljulaid in the round of 16 before overcoming France's Aleksa Mitrovic in the quarterfinals to secure his place among the tournament's four semifinalists.
Three other Azerbaijani judokas were eliminated earlier in the day.
In the men's 90 kg division, Eljan Hajiyev defeated Alexander Knauf of the United States and Canada's Keagan Young before losing to France's Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou in the round of 16.
Suleyman Shukurov, competing in the same weight category, was eliminated in the round of 32 after losing to Japan's Goki Tajima.
In the women's 70 kg category, Sudaba Aghayeva suffered an opening-round defeat against Spain's Ai Tsunoda Roustant.
Azerbaijan has already secured four medals at the home World Championships. Ahmad Yusifov (60 kg) won gold, Zelim Tskayev (81 kg) claimed silver, while Rashid Mammadaliyev (73 kg) and Omar Rajabli (81 kg) earned bronze medals.
Fatiyev now has an opportunity to increase the host nation's medal tally to five.
The World Judo Championships are taking place at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku and will conclude on October 11.

Four Azerbaijani judokas set to compete on fifth day of World Championships in Baku
The hosts will be represented in the women's 70 kg and men's 90 kg categories
Four more Azerbaijani judokas will begin their campaigns at the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku today, October 8.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Sudaba Aghayeva (70 kg), Eljan Hajiyev, Murad Fatiyev and Suleyman Shukurov (all 90 kg) will take to the tatami on the fifth day of the competition.
In the women's 70 kg category, Aghayeva will face Spain's Ai Tsunoda Roustant in the round of 64.
In the men's 90 kg division, Hajiyev will take on Alexander Knauf of the United States in the round of 64, while Shukurov will meet Norway's Cornelius Eylertsen at the same stage.
Fatiyev will enter the competition in the round of 32, where he will face the winner of the contest between Belarusian Yegor Varapayev and Greece's Theodoros Tselidis.
The preliminary rounds are scheduled to begin at 10:30 Baku time, while the final block, featuring the medal contests, will start at 18:00.
The World Championships, held at the National Gymnastics Arena, will conclude on October 11.
