Azerbaijani judokas begin Budapest Grand Slam campaign

The Judo Grand Slam will get underway in Budapest, Hungary, today.

İdman.Biz reports that five Azerbaijani judokas will compete across three weight categories on the opening day of the tournament.

In the women's 48 kg division, Konul Aliyeva will face Angola's Maria Segunda in the round of 32.

In the men's 60 kg category, Babrahim Mirzayev will take on Kazakhstan's Nuradil Alzhan in the round of 64. Murad Muradli, competing in the same weight class, will face Armenian judoka Vahe Aghasyan in the round of 32.

Azerbaijan will also have two representatives in the men's 66 kg division. Rashad Yelkiyev will meet Mohammad Khoshbin, representing the International Judo Federation Refugee Team (IRT), in the round of 32.

Nizami Imranov will begin his campaign against the winner of the contest between Great Britain's Michael Fryer and Kazakhstan's Akzhigit Nassir.

Azerbaijan's campaign will continue on Saturday, when Paris 2024 Olympic champion Hidayat Heydarov takes to the tatami in the men's 81 kg category. The 73 kg Olympic champion has moved up a weight class and will compete in the 81 kg division in Budapest.

The preliminary rounds will begin at 11:00 Baku time, with the final block scheduled for 19:00.
