The FIDE presidential election will go to a second round after no candidate secured the required majority in the first vote in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
As reported by İdman.Biz from Samarkand, Kazakhstan Chess Federation President and businessman Timur Turlov and German businessman Wadim Rosenstein have advanced to the second round.
Turlov received 50 percent of the votes in the first round. However, to be elected FIDE president, a candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the valid votes cast.
As no candidate reached the required threshold, the election will proceed to a runoff. Under the election rules, the two candidates who received the highest number of votes in the first round advance to the second round.
The winner will become the new president of the International Chess Federation.
The newly elected FIDE president is also expected to make the ceremonial first move in round 10 of the 46th Chess Olympiad currently taking place in Samarkand.
