The upcoming ninth-round match between the men's national teams of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand will mark another chapter in one of the most closely contested rivalries in team chess.
As reported by İdman.Biz, prior to their meeting in Uzbekistan, the two teams had faced each other 16 times in major official team competitions with classical time controls – the Chess Olympiad, European Team Chess Championship and World Team Chess Championship.
The overall record shows an almost even rivalry. Azerbaijan have won six matches, Armenia five, while another five encounters ended in draws. This gives Azerbaijan a narrow advantage in terms of team results.
However, Armenia hold a slight lead in the total number of points scored on individual boards – 32.5:31.5. Across 64 games, Azerbaijani players have recorded 12 wins, Armenian players 13, while 39 games ended in draws.
At the Chess Olympiad, the two teams have met four times. The record stands at two team victories apiece, while Armenia have a narrow 8.5:7.5 advantage in board points.
Another nine meetings took place at the European Team Chess Championship. The record there is completely level, with three wins for each team and three draws. Armenia again hold the smallest possible advantage in board points – 18.5:17.5.
At the World Team Chess Championship, however, Azerbaijan have the upper hand. In three meetings, the Azerbaijani team recorded one victory, while the other two matches ended in draws. Azerbaijan also lead 6.5:5.5 in board points.
The statistics over the past decade and a half are particularly notable. Before 2010, Armenia held the advantage. Azerbaijan failed to win any of the first four meetings between the teams, recording one draw and three defeats. The board-point score during that period was 10.5:5.5 in Armenia's favour.
The picture has changed significantly since 2010. In the following 12 matches, Azerbaijan recorded six victories, Armenia won twice and four encounters ended in draws. Azerbaijan also lead 26:22 in board points over this period.
Therefore, while the overall historical record remains extremely close, the longer-term modern trend shows a clear improvement in Azerbaijan's results in this rivalry.
The results of recent years also underline how competitive the matchup remains. In six meetings between 2017 and 2025, Azerbaijan recorded three victories, Armenia two, while one match ended in a draw. The board-point score over those six encounters is perfectly level at 12:12.
The last three matches have also produced different outcomes. The teams drew 2:2 in 2021, Armenia won 3:1 in 2022, before Azerbaijan responded with a 2.5:1.5 victory in 2025.
Ahead of their latest meeting in Samarkand, Azerbaijan therefore hold a narrow 6:5 advantage in team victories, while the statistics since 2010 demonstrate a significant improvement in the national team's results in this rivalry.
