Interview with Rafig Huseynov, Azerbaijan’s Olympic medalist, World and European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.
– It’s interesting to see you at the open Sumgayit city gymnastics championship held at the Sumgayit Olympic Sports Complex…
– First of all, I want to note that organizing such city championships in gymnastics contributes to the development of this sport in the country. Teenagers and young people are gradually starting to take an interest in gymnastics. I came to Sumgayit with my family to show my support for the young athletes. The Azerbaijani national senior team also participated in the competition ahead of the World Championship. As you know, after my shoulder surgery, I received treatment at the National Gymnastics Arena. I have a close friendship with every member of the national team, and my support for them is unwavering.
– Let’s now talk about your profession – wrestling. What are your thoughts on your future career?
– The Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation will announce a surprise decision about me in the coming days. Decisions about the future of athletes at our level are made by the federation. We will accept whatever the leadership decides. Currently, things are going well in the national team, so there’s no need for a coaching change. Honestly, it’s not an easy job, it requires great responsibility. I believe the decision about me will be pleasing for wrestling fans.
– Can you share that decision now?
– No, I don’t want to spoil the surprise (laughs).
– Next month, the World Wrestling Championship among seniors will be held in Zagreb, Croatia.
– The Azerbaijani national team is currently holding a training camp in Istanbul. I will join them in the coming days. The lineup for the World Championship has already been determined, but the names are not being announced yet due to the risk of injury. The mood in the team is very positive. I believe we will repeat the successful results we’ve had in previous years at this tournament.
– What can you say about the current state of men’s and women’s wrestling in Azerbaijan?
– I last attended the U-17 World Championship. Looking at the younger age groups, we can observe a growth trend. I think if we continue like this, we can expect great results at the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games. The Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation is also building new material and technical facilities for athletes to train. Wrestling halls are now being opened not only in Baku but also in the regions. This is a sign of a successful future.
