Azerbaijani wrestlers begin U-17 World Championship campaign

The first wrestling World Championship of the year has kicked off.

The Greco-Roman wrestlers were the first to take the mat at the U-17 category of the championship held in Athens, Greece, Idman.biz reports.

Of the five athletes representing the Azerbaijani national team, four can, at best, compete for a bronze medal.

Gurban Majnunov lost to Kazakh wrestler Nurdaulet Kumaruly 0:10 in the 1/8 finals.

55 kg
Nihat Bahmanov defeated Armenian Merujan Mkhitaryan 5:1 and Romanian Patrick Croitoru 3:1 to advance to the 1/4 finals, but then lost to Kazakh wrestler Nurali Askar 0:2.

65 kg
Huseyn Isgandarov beat Dutch wrestler Mate Van Os 5:4, but lost 1:9 to Armenian Janes Nazaryan in the 1/8 finals.

80 kg
Nijat Yeylagaliyev convincingly defeated Greek Stefanos Konstantinos (8:0) and Kazakh Mardanbek Makhkambayev (13:5). However, he was pinned in the 1/4 finals by Georgian Luka Martiashvili.

110 kg
Rihad Ibrahimli was defeated 0:10 by Uzbek wrestler Sayidamir Nematov in the qualification round.

Gurban, Nihat, Huseyn, and Nijat’s opponents are in the semifinals. If they reach the final, our athletes will compete in tomorrow’s repechage rounds.

The world championship will continue until August 3.
