The head coach of Azerbaijan’s beach wrestling national team, Oyan Nazariani, hopes that the upcoming national championship will attract a large number of participants and allow them to identify the best wrestlers to prepare for the Olympic Games.
The coach shared his thoughts in an interview with Report, Idman.biz reports.
He emphasized that wrestlers from different cities and regions of the country would be recruited to build the team: “This isn’t the first championship held for wrestlers in this age category. Similar events have previously been organized for U17, U20, and senior wrestlers. We are organizing this year’s championship earlier than usual because the Youth Olympic Games will take place next year, and beach wrestling is included in the program. We aim to attract athletes from across the country to participate. Hopefully, there will be a high number of participants, and we’ll be able to select the strongest ones for Olympic preparation.”
Nazariani also noted that changes to the youth lineup could be made ahead of the upcoming World Championship: “In September, the U17 Beach Wrestling World Championship will be held. At the European Championship, we won two gold and one bronze medal in four weight classes. In terms of gold medals, we ranked first. However, due to one poor result, we finished fourth in the team standings. We may include new athletes for the World Championship. As for the senior team, there likely won’t be any changes since the senior World Championship consists of multiple stages and our athletes have already participated in two of them. Depending on the youth team’s performance, there may be lineup changes before the World Championship.”
The Azerbaijan National Championship will take place on July 16–17.
