Interview with Gunay Gurbanova, Gold Medalist at the U-20 European Championship in Caorle, Italy
You became European champion for the second time. What are your impressions?
My goal at this European Championship was the gold medal. I wasn’t thinking about any other medal. I’m happy and proud to have reached the top of the podium again.
Did you expect to achieve this result for the second time?
Yes, as I said, I was only wrestling for the championship.
Recently, Mariya Stadnik, one of the most prominent Azerbaijani female wrestlers, was appointed coordinator of the national team. What can you say about this appointment?
Mariya Stadnik is a highly decorated athlete in the history of Azerbaijani women’s wrestling. I believe she will play a big role in the future successes of our girls.
Although you compete in different weight classes, do you see yourself as a successor to Mariya Stadnik?
As you know, Azerbaijani women’s wrestling has never won an Olympic gold medal, and no local girls participated in this tournament. My dream is to participate in the Olympic Games and be the first to win the gold medal.
How do you assess the current state of women’s wrestling in Azerbaijan?
Women’s wrestling is developing day by day in our country. This is an undeniable fact. Girls from all age groups are now winning medals of various colors at international tournaments. If this continues, I am confident that in a few years we will have world and European champions among the seniors.
