The recently concluded Azerbaijan Wrestling Championship left a strong impression on the national team’s coaching staff, despite the absence of many leading athletes.
Speaking to İdman.Biz, Azerbaijan national team Greco-Roman wrestling coach and two-time Olympic silver medalist Rovshan Bayramov shared his assessment of the tournament and commented on the emergence of new candidates for the national team.
According to Bayramov, the championship stood out for its exciting bouts and the appearance of several promising wrestlers who showed great potential for the future.
“For example, in the 60 kg weight category, Aykhan Javadov delivered confident victories over far more experienced opponents. His final match against Ziyad Zeynalov became a real highlight of the tournament. The same can be said about the 63 kg bout between Ziya Babashov and Sakit Guliyev, where Sakit emerged victorious after a very intense contest,” Bayramov noted.
He also emphasized the unique final between the Ahmadiev brothers, calling it a rare moment in wrestling history.
“The championship will also be remembered for the final match between the Ahmadiev brothers. It is a unique event in wrestling, as it is not often that two brothers compete against each other for a gold medal at a tournament of this level,” Bayramov added.
