During the live broadcast, cameras focused on Fernandez as Messi addressed the crowd. The 25-year-old midfielder was visibly emotional and broke down in tears while listening to his captain's farewell speech.
Messi scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute and also provided two assists in the match.
The legendary forward decided to retire from international football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Messi announced his decision himself in a letter published on social media.
