The ban on drinking alcohol in the stands during football matches in England and Wales could be reviewed.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing The Guardian, Andy Burnham has said the existing restrictions are unfair to football supporters, pointing out that spectators at other sports are allowed to drink alcohol while watching events.
Burnham did not rule out initially testing a relaxation of the ban on a limited basis.
"I don't think it's fair that football fans are singled out in this way. This legislation dates back to a time when football was completely different," he said.
Since 1985, it has been illegal in England and Wales to consume alcohol in areas of football grounds from which the pitch is visible. Rugby and cricket are not subject to the same restriction.
The idea of reviewing the rules has received support from the Football Supporters' Association and the English Football League. However, football policing representatives have stressed that potential safety risks would need to be assessed before any changes are introduced.
In the Women's Super League and the second tier of women's football in England, alcohol consumption in view of the pitch is already permitted following a trial period.
