Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised the club's transfer policy, arguing that the Red Devils are not assembling a squad capable of competing for the Premier League title.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Scholes questioned the club's recent recruitment and suggested that some of the new arrivals have not significantly strengthened the team.
"It is sad to say, but Manchester United are not a club that are trying to build a squad to win the Premier League right now," Scholes was quoted as saying by Metro.
The former England international pointed to Santos and Baleba as examples, noting that while the newcomers may offer greater physical strength, he remains unconvinced that they represent the level of signings required for a title challenge.
"Santos played 11 games for Chelsea and they paid £50 million for him, but he cannot get into the team. Baleba might help in some way, but if you are recruiting for Manchester United at the start of the season, you should be looking for players who can actually win you the league. To me, they are miles away from that," Scholes said.
He also suggested that United's summer business may have left head coach Michael Carrick disappointed.
"I think they are just trying to consolidate what Michael achieved last season, and I cannot understand that. Michael must be very disappointed with the transfers they made in the summer. Deep down, I imagine he feels he has been let down," Scholes added.
Manchester United are currently 12th in the Premier League standings, adding further pressure on the club as they look to improve their position and close the gap on the leading teams.
