Belgium and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss the national team's entire UEFA Nations League campaign.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the 34-year-old made the decision following a meeting with Belgium head coach Mark van Bommel, who travelled to Madrid to discuss the matter with him.
Courtois explained that he believes taking additional rest after the World Cup is the right decision for his physical condition.
"I have decided not to play for Belgium during the entire Nations League campaign. I could only be called up as an exception if the head coach faces a difficult situation due to injuries," the goalkeeper said.
Courtois stressed that his decision does not mean he is retiring from international football. He intends to return to the national team for the European Championship qualifiers.
The Real Madrid goalkeeper also revealed that Van Bommel had made it clear his place in the starting line-up would not be guaranteed upon his return.
"If the goalkeeper who plays in the Nations League performs well, Van Bommel may continue with him. I am ready to fight for my place and prove once again that I am the first-choice goalkeeper," Courtois added.
The decision will give Belgium's other goalkeepers an opportunity to establish themselves during the Nations League campaign, while Courtois focuses on his club commitments and recovery.
