Liverpool are reportedly facing serious squad balance issues despite spending more than £200 million during the summer transfer window.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing Sky Sports, the squad assembled under Andoni Iraola appears overloaded in certain positions while lacking sufficient options in others. Despite the £123 million (€274 million AZN) signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, questions remain over the right wing, full-back positions and midfield.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has also expressed concerns about the balance of the squad. He believes the team still need another full-back and an additional midfielder.
Carragher also considers the absence of a natural left-footed right winger following Mohamed Salah's departure to be one of Liverpool's main problems.
Although Barcola is capable of playing in several attacking positions, he is considered most effective on the left wing. Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz are also players who tend to operate from the left side, creating an imbalance in Liverpool's attacking options.
There are concerns in defence as well. With Conor Bradley sidelined through injury, Jeremie Frimpong has been used at right-back.
In Iraola's system, both full-backs are encouraged to push forward simultaneously, placing additional pressure on the midfield. Liverpool's opponents have reportedly exploited the spaces left behind during counter-attacks in the opening matches.
Despite Iraola having one of the most expensive squads in Liverpool's history at his disposal, the current team is considered one of the club's most problematic in recent years in terms of positional balance.
