Fenerbahce mock Lyon after Champions League triumph as Guendouzi has last laugh

Fenerbahce added insult to Lyon's disappointment after knocking the French club out in the battle for a place in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

As reported by İdman.Biz, the Istanbul club posted a photo on social media showing a smiling Matteo Guendouzi pointing at the Champions League logo on his sleeve.

The post carried extra meaning because of what had happened during the match at Groupama Stadium.

Guendouzi, who played for Lyon's fierce rivals Marseille from 2021 to 2023, received a hostile reception even before kick-off. Lyon supporters loudly booed and insulted the French midfielder during the warm-up, prompting him to respond with an obscene gesture towards the stands and further inflaming the atmosphere.

The tension continued after Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory and booked their place in the Champions League league phase.

Guendouzi celebrated by shouting "Allez l'OM!" ("Come on, Marseille!") and making a gesture associated with Marseille rapper Jul. His actions sparked a confrontation involving players and members of both teams, with the altercation subsequently continuing near the tunnel.

Guendouzi later explained his reaction by claiming that Lyon supporters had insulted him and members of his family throughout the match.

Against that backdrop, Fenerbahce's social media post featuring the smiling midfielder pointing to the Champions League badge appeared to be one final dig at Lyon after the French side's elimination.
