Roberto Martinez is being considered as one of the leading candidates to become the next head coach of the Netherlands national team.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing De Telegraaf, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) is in talks with the 53-year-old Spanish coach.
According to the source, KNVB director of professional football Nigel de Jong met Martinez in Malaga, Spain. The pair discussed the possibility of appointing the Spaniard as the Netherlands head coach.
Martinez is currently without a club or national team. He took charge of Portugal in January 2023 and left the position after the 2026 World Cup.
Before that, the Spaniard managed Belgium. Martinez was in charge of the Belgian national side from 2016 to 2022 and guided them to third place at the 2018 World Cup.
The Netherlands job became vacant following Ronald Koeman’s departure. The KNVB is reportedly in talks with several candidates, with Martinez currently regarded as one of the leading foreign contenders for the position.
Martinez’s managerial career has also included spells at Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton, as well as the national teams of Belgium and Portugal.
