Five arrested in Fenerbahçe bus shooting investigation

Five suspects have been detained as part of an investigation into the armed attack on the Fenerbahçe team bus 11 years ago, İdman.Biz reports.

Following a new analysis of HTS records and mobile phone tower data related to the incident in Trabzon on April 4, 2015, five suspects were detained.

Turkey’s Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said searches and seizures had been carried out at the suspects’ addresses as part of an investigation led by the Trabzon Prosecutor’s Office, based on new evidence. He said the case had been reviewed by the Unsolved Crimes Investigation Department established under the Ministry of Justice, while previously collected evidence was re-examined using modern technology.

The new analysis found that mobile phone signals from some of the suspects were detected in the area through which the Fenerbahçe bus was travelling at the time of the attack. Investigators also noted that the suspects had been in active contact with one another both before and after the incident.

Gürlek said the aim of the investigation was to identify those behind the attack through concrete evidence.

“We will see this process through to the end in order to clarify the questions that the Turkish football community and our people have been waiting for answers to for many years,” he said.

The incident took place on April 4, 2015, following Fenerbahçe’s away match against Çaykur Rizespor. The Fenerbahçe bus was attacked with gunfire in the Araklı district while travelling to Trabzon Airport. The driver suffered serious injuries, while the players and club staff narrowly escaped more severe consequences.

The initial investigation was closed approximately five and a half years later. On May 27, 2026, Turkey’s Ministry of Justice announced that the investigation had been reopened.
