13-time champions find unusual way to raise funds and save club

One of the most decorated clubs in Ecuadorian football, El Nacional, has started selling advertising space on its shirts to fans and businesses in an effort to overcome its financial difficulties.

As reported by İdman.Biz, the Quito-based club has launched a special commemorative shirt that allows buyers to place their name, company logo or brand on it. The initiative was inspired by a similar campaign run by Peruvian club Deportivo Municipal.

Placing a name or logo on the sleeves or back of the shirt costs $250 (AZN 425), while advertising space on the front costs $500 (AZN 850). Fans, entrepreneurs and companies can all take part in the campaign.

The initiative comes amid a serious financial crisis at the club. The 13-time Ecuadorian champions were relegated from the top flight at the end of last season and are currently experiencing financial difficulties. The club’s history also includes a run to the Copa Libertadores semi-finals.

The main aim of the campaign is to raise additional funds through the collective support of fans and businesses. El Nacional is building the initiative around the idea of united support and securing the club’s future.
