Former England captain backs Portugal star and Fernandes ahead of global tournament
Former England international Wayne Rooney has expressed his support for Portugal national football team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, saying he hopes Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo can guide their side to victory, İdman.Biz reports.
Speaking in an interview with Fernandes, Rooney said he would “love” to see Portugal lift the trophy, encouraging the squad to enjoy the occasion and play with freedom. “I’d really like you and Cristiano to win the World Cup. Go and enjoy your football. Have fun, and I hope it works out for you,” Rooney told the BBC.
Portugal are expected to be among the contenders at the expanded tournament, which will take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July 2026. The competition will feature 48 teams for the first time, increasing the level of competition and unpredictability.
Drawn into Group K, Portugal are set to face Uzbekistan, Colombia and DR Congo in the group stage as they aim to progress deep into the tournament. With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent, the team will be looking to build on recent international performances and finally secure football’s biggest prize.
