Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has commented on the incident involving Vinicius Junior and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone during their Spanish Super Cup match.
According to Idman.Biz, Alonso said he always tries to treat opponents with respect and usually avoids engaging in dialogue with them. However, once he understood the meaning of what Simeone had said, he was dissatisfied with the reaction of the Atletico coach.
“I respect my opponents and usually do not talk to them. When I realized what exactly was said, I did not like it. This is not the best example of sporting behavior,” Alonso stated. He also emphasized that not everything is acceptable on the football field and that the boundaries of respect must be observed. “There are limits to what happens on the pitch,” the specialist added.
Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid 2:1 in the semifinal of the tournament. Vinicius was substituted in the 81st minute, after which Simeone first gestured toward the stands and then said something to the player while pointing to his ear. After leaving the field, the Brazilian winger began expressing dissatisfaction with the actions of the opposing head coach, and members of the Real Madrid coaching staff and substitutes had to escort the 25-year-old away from the touchline.
