Azerbaijan to receive Sumo World Championship flag in Bangkok

In September, at the Sumo World Championship to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, the championship’s ceremonial flag will be handed over to Azerbaijan.

Idman.biz reports that Ulvi Agamirov, Vice President of the Azerbaijan Association of Japanese Martial Arts and Culture, stated this in an interview with Report news agency.

He spoke about participating in the presentation ceremony of the 2026 World Championship, which will be held in Baku, during the “Sumo Expo 2025” event in Osaka, Japan: “The event drew significant interest. Many guests attended the gathering. Additionally, on August 5, within the framework of the ‘Osaka Expo,’ the Azerbaijan pavilion hosted the championship presentation, which was highly appreciated by visitors. The championship’s promotional video and the official mascot, ‘Azumo,’ have already been introduced to the public. Azumo symbolizes strength and hospitality.”

The federation official added that preparations have already begun: “Preparations are underway. In September, at the World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, the official flag handover will take place. Updates on the preparation process and championship-related matters will be regularly shared with the public.”

Among the 158 countries participating in the “Sumo Expo 2025,” only five, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Mongolia, Senegal, and Japan, were represented by professional athletes and official delegates who gathered at the event.
