Former US President Donald Trump has threatened to block the Washington Commanders’ £3 billion stadium deal unless the team reverts to its original name, the Washington Redskins.
Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that a “big clamouring” exists to bring back the Redskins name, which he believes would make the team “more valuable” and the stadium deal “more exciting.” The team dropped the Redskins name in July 2020 due to its offensive connotations towards Native Americans and played as the Washington Football Team before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022.
Trump also urged the Cleveland Guardians, formerly the Cleveland Indians, to revert their name, claiming Native American heritage was being undermined. The National Congress of American Indians strongly condemned such views, labeling them racist and harmful stereotypes. The stadium plan, located at the former RFK Stadium site, awaits local approval amid ongoing debate over the team’s name. The Washington Commanders have yet to comment.
