The opening ceremony of the 32nd Summer World University Games has kicked off in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region.
According to Idman.biz’s correspondent dispatched to Germany, the event is being held at the MSV Arena in Duisburg.
In the morning, heavy rain began in the Rhine-Ruhr region, where the Universiade is being held. The rain continued with short breaks until the evening but stopped two hours before the start of the ceremony. The event was officially opened by Hendrik Wust, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. He noted that preparations for organizing this multi-sport event had been underway for the past few years and expressed hope that it would be held successfully. Wust also stated that the Universiade is a major challenge for both participants and organizers. He concluded his welcome speech with the words: “Feel at home.”
Following the opening remarks, the parade of nations began. Team Azerbaijan was the sixth to enter. The country’s flag bearers were gymnast Laman Alimuradova and taekwondo athlete Eltaj Gafarov.
In addition to Duisburg, the competitions will also be held in Berlin, Bochum, Essen, Mulheim, and Hagen. Azerbaijan will be represented in 12 sports, with a total of 71 athletes on the national team.
234 sets of medals will be awarded across 18 sports during the multi-sport event.
