The dates and venue of the Sumo World Championship, which will be held in Azerbaijan for the first time, have been announced.
Idman.Biz was informed of this by Atil Aghamirov, President of the Association of Japanese Martial Arts and Culture. The tournament will take place on October 17–18, 2026, at the Baku Sports Palace.
Aghamirov also spoke about the competition regulations. According to him, athletes from 35 countries are expected to take part, with the number likely to increase. “We will try to ensure the participation of Azerbaijani athletes in every weight category represented at the championship. We want our athletes to compete both in the youth and senior categories. In the men’s and women’s championships, the most relevant weight categories will be 85 kg, 100 kg, 115 kg, and 115+ kg, as well as the open weight category. In addition, a team competition will also be organized”, - Aghamirov said.
