Makhachev's coach: "I have no concerns if Islam fights on the feet"

Islam Makhachev's coach Javier Mendez has spoken about the UFC welterweight champion's upcoming fight against Ian Machado Garry.

According to İdman.Biz, the coach is fully confident in Makhachev's striking ability and stressed that the team are not solely relying on a grappling-based game plan against the Irishman.

"Believe it or not, Islam is extremely good on the feet. If he goes into the Octagon and feels that he can outstrike Ian, that's exactly what we'll do. I have no concerns when he fights on the feet against any opponent," Mendez said.

According to the coach, one of Makhachev's main advantages is his ability to adjust his game plan during a fight depending on the situation. Mendez believes the Russian is operating at a high level both in striking and grappling, meaning there is no need to stick to just one approach against Garry.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be a battle of grappling versus striking. We'll see what he allows us to do and take advantage of it. If fighting on the feet is the better way to win, we'll fight on the feet. If we need to take it to the ground, we'll do that," he added.

Makhachev and Garry will meet in the main event of UFC 330. The bout will take place at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, USA. The event is scheduled for August 15 in US time.

Makhachev will defend his UFC welterweight title. It will be Garry's first UFC title fight. The Irishman has 17 wins and one loss in professional MMA.
