Russian fighter and UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev has turned down an offer to obtain Swedish citizenship, Idman.Biz reports.
According to sports blogger Adam Zubayraev, “Khamzat refused Swedish citizenship when he had the chance to get it. He had a residence permit and a residence card. Let’s also remember the well-known incidents in Sweden - the burning of the Quran, for example. Khamzat was strongly against that. All of these factors, combined with high taxes, influenced his decision,” Zubayraev said on Kamil Gadzhiev’s YouTube channel.
Chimaev lived in Sweden from 2013 to 2023. Although he holds Russian citizenship, he competes in the UFC under the flag of the United Arab Emirates.
