Anar Quliyev: “I want to become European and world champion”

At the World Cadet Judo Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, Azerbaijani representative Anar Quliyev (50 kg), who won a bronze medal, aims to become both European and World Champion in the youth category.

Idman.biz reports that the athlete shared this in an interview with Report news agency.

Reflecting on his third-place finish at the tournament, he said: “I could have achieved a better result, but I settled for the bronze medal. In the match I lost, I gave a bit of space in the parterre, which is why it turned out that way. The Kazakh opponent who defeated me in the quarterfinals also won a bronze medal. I had previously faced the Uzbek athlete who won the gold. At that time, I competed in the 46 kg category and lost in the final.”

Quliyev emphasized that next year he will compete in the youth category: “This was almost my last tournament as a cadet. I have already been European champion among cadets. In the youth category, I aim to become both European and World Champion. My main career goal is to become an Olympic champion at the senior level.”

The individual competition at the World Championships will conclude on August 30, while the mixed team event will take place on August 31.
