The “Grand Slam” judo tournament has kicked off today in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
All three members of the Azerbaijani national team competed on the first day of the tournament. However, they finished the event without medals, Idman.biz reports.
Men
60 kg
Balabay Agayev defeated Mendsaikhan Nyamsuren (Mongolia) in the round of 16, but then lost to Hayato Kondo (Japan).
Turan Bayramov also started the “Grand Slam” with a victory. He eliminated Sumiyabazar Enkhtaivan (Mongolia), but fell short in the quarterfinals against Mehrzod Sufiev (Tajikistan).
In the repechage round, Agayev and Bayramov faced each other, with Turan emerging victorious in the all-Azerbaijani duel in Ulaanbaatar. He then competed against Iznaur Saaev (AIN) for the bronze medal but was defeated, finishing in 5th place.
66 kg
Elshan Asadov defeated Jantsandorj Unurbat (Mongolia) and then Bogdan Iadov (Ukraine), but lost in the quarterfinals to Bauyrzhan Narbayev (Kazakhstan). In the repechage round, he faced Jihyuk Yang (South Korea), who proved to be the stronger opponent. Asadov concluded the “Grand Slam” in 7th place.
The tournament will continue for 3 days.
