Japan to rely on Baku Grand Slam champions at Judo World Championships

Japan has named eight gold medalists from the Baku Grand Slam in its squad for the upcoming Judo World Championships, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary.

The coaching staff of the country widely regarded as the birthplace of judo has chosen to prioritize athletes who achieved success at the Grand Slam event held in Azerbaijan’s capital in February, Idman.biz reports.

The selected judokas include:

Ryuju Nagayama (60 kg)

Takashi Takeoka (66 kg)

Tatsuki Ishihara (73 kg)

Sanshiro Murao (90 kg)

Dota Arai (100 kg)

Hyoga Ota (+100 kg)

Uta Abe (52 kg)

Momo Tamaoki (57 kg)

In total, 18 judokas have been called up to represent Japan at the world championships.

The 2025 Judo World Championships will take place from June 13 to 19 in Budapest.
