The Judo Grand Slam tournament has officially kicked off today in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan.
Two athletes from the Azerbaijan national team competed on the opening day, Idman.biz reports.
Men
60 kg
Balabay Aghayev defeated Achyty Dombuu (IJF) in the round of 16 and then overcame Anvarjon Ibrohimov (Uzbekistan) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he triumphed over Enkhtaivany Ariunbold (Mongolia). Aghayev faced Muhammadsoleh Quvatov (Tajikistan) in the final and secured victory to claim the gold medal.
66 kg
Yashar Najafov defeated Ekhson Safarzoda (Tajikistan) in the round of 16 and Nurmukhamet Botabay (Kazakhstan) in the quarterfinals. He fell short in the semifinals against Obid Dzhebov (Tajikistan) and will now competed against Artem Shturbabin (Uzbekistan) for the bronze medal and lost. He took the 5th place.
The Azerbaijani team has sent eight judokas to the tournament.
