President of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation Rashad Nabiyev delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the World Judo Championships in Baku.
İdman.Biz reports that Nabiyev said it was a great honour for Azerbaijan to welcome the world judo family to Baku once again.
"It is a great honour for us to welcome the world judo family to Baku once again. Judo is not only about competition on the tatami, but also a philosophy of self-discipline, courage and friendship.
Years ago, our country embarked on a great journey with the desire to enrich people's lives through judo and raise a generation of young people who are physically and morally healthy and strong. Today, seeing those aspirations become a reality is a source of immense pride.
Thanks to the constant support of President of Azerbaijan and President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev for sport, our country has become a major sports hub that hosts world-class competitions and is renowned for its hospitality and organisational experience.
International cooperation is also an important part of this success story. We express our deep gratitude to the International Judo Federation and personally to Marius Vizer for once again placing their trust in Baku to host the World Championships," Nabiyev said.
The federation president also emphasised the role of judo in educating the younger generation.
"The main goal is for every child who enters a judo hall to become not only a future champion, but first and foremost a worthy citizen of our society. This philosophy lies at the heart of our country's youth and sports policy.
Dear athletes and coaches, in the coming days you will compete not only for the world title, but also to demonstrate the excellence and nobility of judo. I wish each of you fair competition, great sportsmanship and unforgettable moments in Baku," he added.
The World Judo Championships at the National Gymnastics Arena will conclude on October 11. Azerbaijan's Ahmad Yusifov won the men's 60 kg title on the opening day of the competition.
