The Judo Grand Slam continues in Lausanne, Switzerland, with five Azerbaijani athletes set to take to the tatami on the second competition day.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the Azerbaijani judokas will compete across three weight categories.
In the women's 70 kg category, Sudaba Aghayeva will face Brazil's Luana Carvalho in the round of 32.
In the men's 73 kg division, Kamran Suleymanov will begin his campaign in the round of 64 against Portugal's Otari Kvantidze. Rashid Mammadaliyev, competing in the same weight category, will enter the tournament in the round of 32, where he will face the winner of the bout between Israel's Ohad Moritz and the UAE's Karim Abdulayev.
In the 81 kg category, Vusal Galandarzade will meet Bahrain's Gadzhi-Davud Gasanov in the round of 64. Omar Rajabli will start from the round of 32 against the winner of the contest between Kazakhstan's Adilet Almat and Italy's Vincenzo Pelligra.
The preliminary rounds are scheduled to begin at 10:30 Baku time, with the final block starting at 19:00.
The Lausanne Grand Slam offers ranking points towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. Azerbaijan is represented by 14 judokas – 10 men and four women – across nine weight categories. The tournament will conclude on August 30.
Azerbaijan was unable to win a medal on the opening competition day. Ahmad Yusifov (60 kg), Ruslan Pashayev and Turan Bayramov (both 66 kg), Leyla Aliyeva (50 kg) and Gultaj Mammadaliyeva (52 kg) all finished outside the medal positions.
