Benfica president Rui Costa unintentionally disclosed the salary of new head coach Jose Mourinho, confirming the Portuguese manager earns around €3 million net in his first season, rising to €4 million in the second, Idman.biz reports.
Speaking publicly, Costa stressed Mourinho’s contract is valuable but not excessive, noting it is lower than what former coach Roger Schmidt earned.
Mourinho, appointed on September 18, replaced Bruno Lage and has already managed two matches, securing one win and one draw. Costa praised Mourinho’s commitment, revealing the manager agreed to a rare clause: the buyout for early termination is less than half his annual salary.
Costa emphasized Mourinho’s timing and respect for Benfica’s current situation, stating, “His desire to come to Benfica convinced me that right now, he is the perfect coach for us.” Previously, Mourinho managed Fenerbahce in Turkiye but was dismissed due to disagreements with club leadership. The appointment marks a high-profile return of the 60-year-old coach to Portuguese football.
