Is Jose Mourinho set to take over Benfica?

Lisbon’s Benfica has officially parted ways with head coach Bruno Lage following a 2-3 defeat to Qarabag in the first round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Idman.biz citing A Bola portal, reports that the club’s next manager will be Jose Mourinho. The agreement with the 62-year-old Portuguese coach is expected to run until the end of the 2026/27 season. Currently, the parties are discussing the financial terms of the contract, including the impact of Mourinho’s termination agreement with Fenerbahce.

Mourinho is expected to make his debut on Benfica’s bench in Saturday’s Primeira Liga match against ABC. To do so, he will cut short his vacation, which was originally planned to end over the weekend.

Mourinho has previously worked in Portugal, and his illustrious coaching career includes stints at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Fenerbahce. His arrival at Benfica could become one of the most high-profile events of the Portuguese football season.
