Qarabag, which defeated Benfica in the first round of the UEFA Champions League group stage, dedicated this historic victory to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Club president Tahir Gozel made the announcement in an interview with Qarabag’s official website, Idman.biz reports.
He stated that the match, recorded in Azerbaijani football history as the first win in the Champions League group stage, is dedicated to the great leader and Supreme Commander of the nation, Ilham Aliyev: “We dedicate this victory to the conqueror of Karabakh, a historic figure, the great and wise leader of our people, Supreme Commander Ilham Aliyev.”
In Portugal, Qarabag trailed 0-2 but managed to score three goals and secure a resilient 3-2 victory. This marked the first-ever win for an Azerbaijani club in the Champions League group stage.
