MLS sets record with $336 million transfer spending in 2025

MLS clubs spent approximately $336 million on transfers in 2025.

The United States’ top football league set a new record this year in terms of money spent by clubs on transfers, Idman.biz reports.

In the 2024 calendar year, MLS clubs had spent a total of $188 million. Thus, in 2025 this figure increased by 78%.

Last year’s $336 million would have ranked eighth among all leagues worldwide.

The final global figures for this year will be announced later, since transfer windows in most European countries remain open until September 1, while Mexico’s Liga MX window runs until September 11.

Currently (with the MLS transfer window having closed last week), MLS clubs’ total spending for 2025 is almost double that of Mexico’s league clubs at present.

This off-season also saw the most expensive transfer in league history, with midfielder Son Heung-min moving from Tottenham to Los Angeles for $26 million.

The increase in spending is linked to the introduction of paid domestic transfers. Previously, clubs could exchange players without using money.
