Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon apologizes after red card in Liverpool defeat

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has issued a public apology to his teammates, fans, and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after being sent off in their dramatic 3-2 Premier League loss at St James’ Park on Monday.

Idman.biz, citing Reuters, reports that the 24-year-old England international received his marching orders in first-half stoppage time when a reckless challenge left stud marks on Van Dijk’s calf. Referee Simon Hooper initially showed a yellow card but upgraded it to red after review.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Newcastle rallied from two goals down to level the match, only to be undone in the 100th minute by Liverpool’s 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who scored the winner for the reigning champions.

“My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and mistimed the tackle,” Gordon wrote on social media, adding that he also apologized directly to Van Dijk. Newcastle will aim to regroup when they visit Leeds United on Saturday.
