Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that the loss left Santos just two points above the relegation zone, and coach Cleber Xavier was dismissed hours after the defeat. Philippe Coutinho scored twice to secure Vasco’s first league win in six games and their biggest victory in 17 years.
Neymar expressed his frustration: “I’m ashamed. Our attitude on the field was terrible. The tears were from anger and disappointment. Fans have the right to protest, but violence is not needed. Today, everyone should reflect on what they want to do.”
The 33-year-old, who returned to Santos in January after leaving Saudi side Al-Hilal, has six goals and three assists in 21 games since rejoining. Santos had been promoted back to the top flight last November after a year in Serie B. The club faces fourth-placed Bahia away on 24 August.
